Biokode vs MyFitnessPal: the biggest database vs the coach that crosses your data
MyFitnessPal is the most used calorie counter in the world: over twenty million foods, twenty languages, integration with almost any tracker and, since June 2026, an AI Coach in its paid plans. Biokode is a younger, narrower AI health coach app: logging by photo, voice and barcode, 27 micronutrients against European references, a plan that recalibrates with your weight and patterns between what you eat and how you sleep.
If you have been on MyFitnessPal for years, this page tells you what you would gain and what you would lose by switching. The second part is not small, and we say it as clearly as the first.
What each one does, in one table
MyFitnessPal facts come from its plans page, its App Store listing and its press releases; Biokode facts from the app and our methodology.
| Criterion | MyFitnessPal | Biokode |
|---|---|---|
| AI coach | AI Coach (since June 2026, in Premium and Premium+): suggests what to eat from your logs and goals when you ask | Kodi: remembers your history, writes to you in the morning and at the close of the day, and switches off with a toggle |
| Food logging | Manual search on the free tier; barcode scanner, photo (Meal Scan) and voice only on paid plans | Photo, voice, text and barcode included; estimated portions are flagged and can be corrected |
| Database | Over 20 million foods, 68,500 brands and dishes from 380+ restaurant chains, with user-created entries | USDA and CIQUAL for composition and Open Food Facts for barcodes, with provenance per food; smaller catalogue |
| Micronutrients | Those on the US nutrition label (sodium, potassium, cholesterol, fibre, sugar, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron), with US reference targets | 27, against EFSA reference values by sex and age |
| Food crossed with sleep and HRV | No: it syncs steps, workouts and weight from 40+ devices and apps | Personal correlations between what you eat and your sleep, HRV and resting heart rate |
| Calorie plan | Fixed target from your profile; recalculated when you update your weight | Mifflin-St Jeor to start, weekly recalibration from your weight trend and meals |
| Photo accuracy | Not published | Measured on Nutrition5k, a public dataset, with the results in our methodology |
| Languages | 20, including Spanish and Italian | Spanish, English and Italian |
| Ads | Yes on the free tier; ad-free on Premium and Premium+ | No |
| Where your data lives | US company; its policy provides for data processing in the US | Hosted in the EU under GDPR (AI processing in the US under standard contractual clauses) |
| Price | Free with ads and no scanner; Premium €79.99/year or €19.99/month; Premium+ €99.99/year or €24.99/month; 7-day trial | €59.99/year or €12.99/month, with a 7-day trial; no free plan |
Where MyFitnessPal wins
- The database: twenty million foods, local brands from half the world and dishes from restaurant chains. If you eat out often or buy unusual brands, you will find the exact entry more often than in Biokode.
- Free forever: manual logging with calories and macros costs nothing, in exchange for ads and no scanner.
- Integrations: 40+ trackers, scales and apps, plus Wear OS. If your ecosystem is unusual, MyFitnessPal probably already connects to it.
- Community and track record: twenty years of use, forums, shared recipes and a meal planner with a grocery list on Premium+.
- GLP-1 tracking: it logs how you feel on the medication, which Biokode does not have.
Where Biokode wins
- Micronutrients with a reference: 27, compared with EFSA values for your sex and age, not just the nine on the US label.
- Photo, voice and barcode included, not as a paid extra: logging takes seconds from day one.
- It crosses food with sleep and HRV: it tells you, from your own nights, what changes when you eat late or drink alcohol, and how confident it is.
- A plan that recalibrates itself: every week it compares your intake with your weight trend and adjusts your estimated expenditure in capped steps that you confirm.
- A coach that starts the conversation: Kodi opens and closes your day with your numbers; MyFitnessPal’s AI Coach answers when you ask.
- Data in the EU, no ads, and a lower yearly price than Premium.
Price: €59.99 vs €79.99 a year
MyFitnessPal can be used for free, with ads and manual logging. The barcode scanner, photo and voice come with Premium (€79.99 a year or €19.99 a month) and the meal planner with Premium+ (€99.99 a year or €24.99 a month), both with a 7-day trial. Biokode costs €59.99 a year (€5.00 a month) or €12.99 a month, with a 7-day trial on the annual plan, and has no free plan.
For €20 less a year than Premium, Biokode includes what costs money there (photo, voice, scanner) and adds what does not exist there (micronutrients against EFSA, the sleep and HRV cross, the adaptive plan). In exchange, you will search for some products MyFitnessPal would have and Biokode does not.
Who each one is for
- Choose MyFitnessPal if you want a free counter or the biggest database there is, if you often eat at restaurant chains or if your tracker only connects there.
- Choose Biokode if logging feels like a chore and you want it to take seconds, if you care about reaching your iron, magnesium or vitamin D against a serious reference, if you wear a wearable and want to know how what you eat relates to how you sleep, and if you prefer your data in Europe with no ads.
- Both are wellness tools: neither replaces a healthcare professional.
