Biokode vs ChatGPT: a coach with your data vs an assistant that knows everything
A lot of people already ask ChatGPT how many calories a dish has, whether creatine makes you gain weight or what to cook with what is in the fridge. It does that well and, for most of those questions, for free. Biokode is a different thing: an AI health coach app that keeps what you eat, crosses it with your sleep and training, and adjusts your plan with your real weight.
The honest comparison is not “which one knows more about nutrition” (ChatGPT, no contest). It is what happens after the answer: who keeps the data, who remembers it tomorrow and who tells you, with your numbers, what to change.
What each one does, in one table
ChatGPT facts come from OpenAI’s pages and specialised press; Biokode facts from the app and our methodology.
| Criterion | ChatGPT | Biokode |
|---|---|---|
| AI coach | General-purpose chat with memory across conversations; answers when asked and can schedule reminders or daily summaries | Kodi: works on your log, writes to you in the morning and at the close of the day, and switches off with a toggle |
| Food logging | You describe or photograph a meal and it estimates calories in the conversation; no diary with daily totals and no barcode scanner | Photo, voice, text and barcode; every entry adds to the day and estimated portions are flagged and can be corrected |
| Micronutrients | One-off estimates in the chat, with no daily running total and no references by sex and age | 27, against EFSA reference values by sex and age, totalled by day and by week |
| Food data | The model’s general knowledge, with no source per food | USDA and CIQUAL for composition, Open Food Facts for barcodes, with provenance per food |
| Food crossed with sleep and HRV | Health in ChatGPT connects Apple Health and other apps to answer questions; available in the United States since 23 July 2026 and, at launch, not in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK | Personal correlations between what you eat and your sleep, HRV and resting heart rate, with sample minimums and a statistical test |
| Calorie plan | Works out a target if you ask; does not know what you weigh this week unless you tell it every time | Mifflin-St Jeor to start, weekly recalibration from your weight and meals; bounded adjustments that you confirm |
| Photo accuracy | Not published | Measured on Nutrition5k, a public dataset, with the results in our methodology |
| Language | Any | Spanish, English and Italian |
| Where your data lives | OpenAI, United States. According to OpenAI, Health conversations are not used to train its models; in the general chat it depends on your data setting | Hosted in the EU under GDPR (AI processing in the US under standard contractual clauses); no ads |
| Price | Free with usage limits; Go about $8 a month and Plus $20 a month; Free and Go may show ads in some markets | €59.99/year or €12.99/month, with a 7-day trial; no free plan |
Where ChatGPT wins
- Price: for one-off nutrition questions, the free plan covers almost everything you need.
- Breadth: it translates a menu in Japanese, explains a study, suggests three dinners from what is in your fridge and settles a question about a supplement, all in one conversation.
- Clinical health (in the United States): Health in ChatGPT can connect medical records and lab results from supported providers and help you prepare for an appointment.
- Memory of what you tell it: if you have said you are coeliac, it will keep that in mind next time.
Where Biokode wins
- It keeps the data: every meal adds to a day with calories, macros and micronutrients; ChatGPT gives you a figure and the conversation moves on.
- It recalibrates the plan with your scale: every week it compares your intake with your weight trend and estimates your real expenditure. ChatGPT only knows what you repeat to it.
- It crosses food with sleep and HRV using statistics: not “late dinners affect sleep” in general, but how many minutes less you sleep after a late dinner and on how many nights it checked.
- It takes the initiative: it opens your day in the morning and closes it at night with your numbers, without being asked.
- Barcodes and a catalogue with sources: a product entry comes from Open Food Facts or from USDA and CIQUAL, not from a model’s guess.
- Health data in the EU, no ads, and a clear policy: your conversations are not used for training.
Price: €0 vs €5 a month
ChatGPT has a free plan with usage limits and ads in some markets, a Go plan at about $8 a month and the Plus plan at $20 a month. Biokode costs €59.99 a year (€5.00 a month) or €12.99 a month, with a 7-day trial on the annual plan.
The useful question is not which is cheaper, but whether you are going to use the conversation as a diary. If so, a chat is not built for it: it does not add up, does not remember yesterday’s total and does not know what happened to your weight. If not, free ChatGPT is a perfectly good answer.
Who each one is for
- Use ChatGPT if you want to settle nutrition questions, understand a concept or get meal ideas without logging anything.
- Use Biokode if you want to log without friction, know whether you reach your iron or vitamin D, have a plan that adjusts to your real weight and check with your own data how what you eat relates to how you sleep.
- Many Biokode users keep using ChatGPT for the first job. It is not an either-or; it is a division of labour.
